In Theosophy, the “Higher Spiritual Path” refers to the special case that hastens the process towards spiritual realization by qualifying an aspirant for direct guidance under a spiritual teacher or Master of the Wisdom. This is the path toward probation, chelaship, and ultimately initiation into that immemorial Order of Adepts, certain of whom were the teachers and guru of H.P. Blavatsky. The best such single word may well be “purification,” but describing efforts to purify not just the physical body, but also one’s thoughts, words, and deeds — the Outer and the Inner Self.

William Wilson Quinn, M.A. (Religious Studies), Ph.D. (Humanities), and J.D. (Law) has been a member of the Theosophical Society since 1969. In the 1970s he was editor of Quest magazine and an Associate Editor of the Theosophical Publishing House. Mr. Quinn is the author of three books, the last of which is The Chela’s Handbook, and of more than 60 articles on comparative religion, spirituality, and metaphysics, as well as Native American history, culture, and law, published in a wide assortment of national academic journals and law reviews.
