South Africa Gets Massive Snow , Motorists Trapped on Highways
South Africa is experiencing snow right now due to a spring cut-off low weather system that's bringing very cold, wet, and windy conditions to southern and eastern parts of the country ¹. This system has led to hazardous travel conditions, especially in mountainous areas, with icy roads and reduced visibility caused by blowing snow ².
Affected Areas:
• Lesotho: The entirety of Lesotho is expected to receive snow.
• Eastern Cape: Northern parts of the Eastern Cape will experience snow.
• Drakensberg: Southern, Central, and Northern Drakensberg will receive snow.
• Natal Midlands: Parts of the Natal Midlands will also experience snow.
The South African Weather Service has issued an Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive snow in several local municipalities, including Dihlabeng, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, and Greater Kokstad ². This warning indicates hazardous travel conditions, and residents are advised to take precautions while traveling.
Travel Disruptions:
• The N3 national road at Van Reenen's Pass has been closed due to dangerous conditions, including black ice ³.
• Traffic disruptions are likely on major routes, especially in mountainous areas.
• Authorities may close stretches of highways if driving conditions become too hazardous.
Stay safe and warm, and check the latest weather updates before traveling!
