A vital necessity for its 5 million inhabitants, subject to the whims of Etna, the highest volcano in Europe, in almost permanent activity. The island is also located at the junction of the Eurasian and African plates. Since 2011, a new crater has attracted the interest of scientists. Boris Behncke, a German observer, believes that the volcano is as much a threat as a blessing for the population because its eruptions make the land extremely fertile.
