The viola da gamba tradition in northern Europe is reflected in this section of Jordi Savall’s recital. Abel, who is remembered for the concerts he organised in London with Johann Christian Bach, was famous in his time as a viola da gamba performer. The viola da gamba repertoire is indebted to Johann Sebastian Bach for his suites (more widely known today in their version for cello), the most important of the genre during the Baroque, while Schenk’s music synthesises the English, German and French traditions.
