This is my second upload of this performance of 27 January 1977. The first had blips from the original cueing on my CDs, which have now been eliminated and which should make for a more satisfactory listening experience.
This magnificent performance was the last of three at the Vienna State Opera (Act 1 up to the end of the Emperor's scene at “Kann sein, drei Tage komm ich nicht heim” is from one of the earlier performances). The performances were the first revival of the 1964 Karajan production which had two performances, with Gundula Janowitz replacing Leonie Rysanek as the Kaiserin in the second. The DGG commercial recording was mastered from Austrian Radio tapes made during the series of performances in October/November 1977, when Matti Kastu was replaced by James King.(Apologies for the incorrect performance date shown on the video.)
