An island on the outer rim of a gigantic underwater volcano / Walk around the island village, East China Sea, Takeshima (Kagoshima Prefecture)

Takeshima
94km from Kagoshima Port, it is the gateway to the village closest to the Kyushu mainland among the three islands of Mishima Village. Late Jomon ruins have been discovered, and the Nihon Shoki records that a Japanese envoy ship was wrecked on Takeshima in 653 (4th year of Hakuchi). The island is hilly with no rivers, and the entire mountain is covered with Ryukyu bamboo (daimyo bamboo), with few hanging trees, hence the name Takeshima. The bamboo is used for the year-round grazing of Mishima's unique black cattle, and the boiled processing of daimyo bamboo shoots. Recently, efforts are underway to brand daimyo bamboo shoots as "Kiseki no Takenoko". It is also commonly called Takashima. It is included in the Mishima Village Kikai Caldera Geopark. In October 2016, regular ferries increased from three to four times a week, improving the convenience of residents' lives. The number of people returning to the island has also increased, and in 2018, the first shop in 20 years opened on the island. The population is also increasing.
