Maria studies medicine, is cheerful, enjoys herself, has many siblings and many more friends. On the surface, an enviable life. However, like everyone else, Maria also has her Achilles' heel.

She says that what makes her special, what makes her best, what inevitably makes her the center of any environment she finds herself in, is due to her "spina bifida". She was born in spite of it. "Despite", because if it had not been for the determination of María Jesús, her mother, the doctors would have ensured that she would never see the light of day. "He will be a vegetable," they warned. The best prediction, which she received a few years later from a nurse, was: "She will never get out of a wheelchair".
