I’ll be honest, leather cases are hard to review. Why? Because it takes forever to see the patina develop on the leather. Out of the dozen plus cases that I choose for my test group, there was one that just blew me away. The case from Blackbrook was phenomenal to use. But will it protect your iPhone…well…

I had enough cases to do a Top 10 list but I felt cases 6-10 weren’t worth mentioning…they were basically the same case with different branding. The cases in the Top 5 are actual leather cases, not normal cases with a piece of leather glued to the back of the case.

#1 - BlackBrook Burton Case - https://mreh.ca/3ZlfHDQ

-high quality full grain leather
-leather outside and inside
-metallic buttons that make the case feel even more luxurious
-metallic camera ring
-full on leather case
-use to be known as Buckley cases

#2 - Mujjo Leather Case - https://mreh.ca/3knj4LO

-Uses Ecco leather
-Full Grain leather doesn’t have a heavy finish on it though it doesn’t have the same uniqueness as the Blackbrook case
-leather finish looks more like top grain leather
-minimal finish improves handling of the case
-cutout edge at the bottom is really noticeable

#3 - Nomad Cases - https://mreh.ca/41n8JjA

-well made case as the seam between the TPU case and the leather is barely noticeable
-Lots of different colors as well as two different leather types, Ecco leather or Horween leather
-Horween leather finished cases look incredible as you can see the unique features of the hide that was used
-Nomad cases uses the least amount of leather in the top 5
-the case edge is chamfered and the leather goes right up to the chamfering on the case
-the chamfered edge makes the iPhone feel thinner as well as reducing the contact the leather has with your hands
-toughest case in this top 5 list as the case edge is around 2.5 mm thick
-protection is offset by the fact that the screen clearance is one of the shallowest
-doesn’t have metallic buttons

#4 - Apple Leather Case - https://mreh.ca/3It2GRZ

-Fits the iPhone well
-build quality is higher/consistent than other brands
-changed the leather about 3 years ago, much better though I’m not sure where it’s sourced from. Google says the iPhone SE leather case comes from italy.
-Finish is better on the newer cases
-Cutouts at the bottom are noticeable
-Really bright colors to choose from
-least protective as the corners are the thinnest

#5 - Bellroy Mod - https://mreh.ca/3EAKrsM

-couldn’t stand Bellroy until they came out with the Mod
-Bellroy uses more leather than Nomad
-Has a similar chamfered edge BUT the seam between the leather and TPU case is quite noticeable. It isn’t as smooth as Nomad’s finish
-Uses Ecco leather
-doesn’t offer a Full grain case option
-matching mod wallet is really nice. Doubles as a stand and the magnetic action on the wallet closure is addicting to use
-not as protective as the Top 3 cases as the case edge is shallow
