GROENEKAN - A plane crash is sometimes in a small corner. This is also known by retired pilot Rod Lovell. He had to land Douglas DC-3 in Sydney on 24 April 1994 after an engine failure. At MPS in Groenekan he relived his flight in the only DC-3 simulator in the world.
It still gnaws at him, that feeling if he made the right decision by using a water landing. The Australian Aviation Service CASA accused Lovell and his colleague of acting incorrectly, as they take off with an overloaded aircraft. In addition, the CASA claimed that the battered DC-3 should have been able to return to a single engine.
At MPS, for the first time in years, Lovell crawled into the cockpit of a DC-3, assisted by DDA pilot Tom van Hoorn.
