‘TWO FRIENDS’ – (‘Dostojee’) had its World Premiere at the 65th London Film Festival on October 12 at the London Film Festival (October 6-17).
www.asianculturevulture.com caught up with writer-director Prasun Chatterjee to talk about his deeply impressive debut feature film.
It charts the friendship between two young boys who live in a rural village close to the border area, between India and Bangladesh, in West Bengal.
One of the boys Palash is Hindu and the other Safikul is Muslim.
Set in 1993 after the demolition of the Babri Masjid Mosque in Ayodhya, (a disputed site where both communities claimed ownership) north India and the Mumbai terror blasts, the boys’ innocent and joyous friendship becomes entangled in their parent’s growing unease about mixing with others from another community.
Gentle, subtle and beautifully observed, Chatterjee’s film is a beautiful ode to childhood friendship and the passions of two boys who both learn and play together and are inseparable in their companionship.
Not only is their friendship tested by the adults in their lives but a huge trauma forces them apart.
The interview was conducted as part the BFI London Film Festival Teas at The May Fair Hotel, London W1 on October 11.
