Check out Hannah and I's tour of The Shire at Hobbiton! This was the original filming location of The Shire for the Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as The Hobbit trilogy. You'll also notice construction of a new hobbit hole, Bagshot Row, in the video that is now operational and a part of the main tour!

It's about a 2 hour drive from Auckland to get to Hobbiton, and it is worth every minute! This is certainly a must-do excursion if you even remotely enjoy the movies or books.
