Bus line No. 5 in Hamburg is one of the most frequented lines in Europe. It is used by 61,000 persons every day. Extra large buses are used on this line. Until autumn of 2018, double articulated buses Van Hool AGG300 were in service here, overall length approx. 25 meters. Theses buses were more often defective than other buses as there are high traction forces on the two joints, and, as in Hamburg they were heavily used on line 5. All AGG300 are now withdrawn from service.
The Van Hool buses were replaced by Mercedes CapaCity L. These are articulated buses, developed from Citaro G articulated buses, but 3 meters longer (21 meters in total). The trailing part of the bus has got 2 axles, the second one of them is steered in curves. CapaCity L buses can transport less passengers than AGG300, so the bus frequency on line 5 had to be increased. There is a bus now every 3–4 minutes.
Bus line 5 follows the same route that was in former times (up to 1978) serviced by Hamburg's tram line 2. Between the city centre and the quarter of Lokstedt there are separate bus lanes where the tram tracks were lying in former times. Along some parts of the route you can still see the former concrete tram poles where the catenary wires were suspended. There are so many passengers on this line that it would well be worth being operated as a light rail/modern tram line. Unfortunately, the Social Democrat/Green government of Hamburg has stopped all plans for a light rail system in 2011. So this line will be operated with buses for an unknown time in the future, although a light rail system would be ecologically advantageous.

The various scenes were filmed in the years 2017 und 2018 at several places along bus line 5.

02:38 Rides from Rathausmarkt to Jungfernstieg

There are no more Van Hool AGG300 in Hamburg nowadays. If you want to see them or want to have a ride on one of them, you have to go to Aachen. ASEAG still has buses of this type in operation.
