Finding cocoons is easy. But it helps to know the tricks and tactics for finding them. I'm taking you into the field -and along the roadways.. in search of cocoons. Southcentral Pa is a great region to spend a day in the field, looking for the native silk moth (Saturnidae) cocoons. I'll also explore the inside of the cocoon, as well as the common species that occur throughout most of the eastern USA. I spend many hours hiking the woods and fields around my home and I typically do very well finding most of these native species. I'll keep the cocoons I find and hopefully have female moths eclose, which will then use pheromones to attract the males to mate with. The eggs I'll retrieve from the female moths will allow me to rear broods of caterpillars for my educational programs and video's. Take advantage of this video to help YOU learn how to search for cocoons in your area, too. This is a GREAT activity for kids and families to do. Hopefully you'll watch and learn how fun this is.
