We have a new boardwalk!

The Wildwood Boardwalk reconstruction phases 3, 4, and 5 are almost done BUT on Friday, March 29th, we were able to finally walk on most of it as it opened to the public.

The news came around 11am when the city of Wildwood announced that as of that afternoon, visitors would be able to walk on the main stretch of the boardwalk from Oak to Spicer Ave.

The Wildwood Video Archive was able to stop by and check out the new boardwalk just hours after it opened. We filmed the full boardwalk section for you to check out at the bottom of this article.

If you have been following the Wildwood Boardwalk reconstruction project, you would know that as of October 2023, the length of the boardwalk along with the Cedar Ave corridor has been closed and is under construction.

These new phases of the project are in their third year.

Phase 1, which happened in 2021, covered the segment from Oak to Maple Avenues, and Phase 2, completed last year, extended from Maple to 26th Street.

These next phases were similar to the first two with the same outcome but the processes are a bit different. Here’s a breakdown of these phases:

Phase III involves the rehabilitation of the boardwalk from Oak Avenue to Schellenger Avenue.

This section of the boardwalk is a newer section from 2015. This phase included the removal of the existing IPE decking, repairing any damage in the glulam framing, and then placing the same IPE decking back in place.

There was one section in front of Hot Spot that did have much damage, which involved most of the framing to be replaced. This can be seen in the video at the bottom of the article.

Phase IV, which focused on the Cedar Avenue Connector section of the boardwalk running East to West, was a complete demolition and removal of the existing boardwalk and substructure. Afterwards they constructed a completely new boardwalk in its place.

This phase also includes the addition of new amenities, such as an archway sign, railings, perforated metal fencing, bike racks, light poles, and more, contributing to a modernized boardwalk experience.

This section was not open to the public this weekend since work still needs to be completed.

Phase V brings us full circle, as it mirrors the processes undertaken in the initial phases, specifically phases I and II.

This involved the removal of the concrete tram pads, fixing structural parks, and the installation of a new surface.

All of these projects include the railings and some new steps and ramps.

While this project was going on we also saw the renovation of the Wildwoods Information Station which received a new sign, new decking and a fresh coat of paint inside.
