This was originally a Mexican folk song, until 1958 when, a self-taught musician, Ritchie Valens added a little magic.
Born Richard Valenzuela in Pacoima, Los Angeles his main musical influences were thought to be Mexican initially.
As he was about to make it famous as part of the Winter Dance Party Tour when tragedy happened in what is often referred to as The Day the Music Died. On February 3rd 1959, Ritchie, aged 17, died in a plane crash along with Buddy Holly and the The Big Bopper (J P Richardson) an event remembered in Don McLean’s song American Pie.
A film to celebrate his life ‘La Bamba’ was released in 1987 with Lou Diamond Philips playing Ritchie and Los Lobos performing most of the music.
