- For today we prepared another video from the series Railway Nation in which we comprehensively discussed - the railway system of Denmark.

The reasons why we decided to do Denmark lies in the 2017 European Railway Performance Index, which includes the most comprehensive benchmarking of European railway systems. In this report, which takes into account the three critical components of railway performance - the intensity of use, quality of service, and safety - Denmark is ranked 2nd!

In addition, what makes Denmark specific is the fact that it spreads across numerous islands. More precisely, there’s an archipelago of about 440 islands, of which about 70 are inhabited.

What is also interesting about the Danish railways is the fact that the construction of railway lines there took place almost in parallel on the peninsula and on the islands, while the first connections were made possible only by ferries.

In order to enable an efficient railway connection between the railway networks located on the islands and the peninsula, marvel engineering structures had to be built in the form of complex bridges or a combination of bridges and tunnels. Some of them are the Great Belt Fixed Link, Øresund Bridge, Storstrøm, Little Belt, etc.

Due to the railway infrastructure that failed over time and the railway services that did not serve either the population or the economy, the Danish government made a political turn, and gradually set aside money with the aim of a complete settlement of the maintenance backlog and the establishment of quality infrastructure.

Furthermore, Rail Net Denmark received support to build Denmark's first 60 km long Copenhagen-Køge-Ringsted high-speed line.

Today, Danish Railways serves over 200 million passengers a year with the organization of almost a million trains with great punctuality of traffic.
