The Grey-headed Swamphen also known as Porphyrio poliocephalus is a truly amazing bird that stands out for its striking appearance and unique behaviors.

Which is about 45-50 cm tall and weighs around 700-1000 grams. It has a beautiful grey head and a vibrant purple-blue body.

The bird's red bill and frontal shield along with its long red legs give it an individual look in its natural habitat.

The birds are mainly found in wetlands, marshes, swamps, ponds, and lakes in Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, the Middle East, and Australia.

Grey-headed Swamphens have a diet that includes both plants and animals. They eat a mix of different types of plants that grow in water, small animals, bugs and seeds. When you're near the water's edge keep an eye looking for them. They're always search for their next meal.

These birds like to choose areas with lots of thick plants near water. They build strong nests there and lay 3-6 eggs.

The birds are also famous for their unique call, which is a loud and harsh 'krek-krek' sound that can be heard echoing through their wetland homes. When you listen carefully you might be able to hear them communicating with each other especially when it's breeding season.
