Ethiopia has been abuzz with rumors of a new war - which would be Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's fourth in just five years. A shocking number no doubt, but to Ethiopia, there’s something the country needs desperately, something it considers almost existential, one critical, missing ingredient to realize its full economic potential: access to the ocean.
In exchange for a 50-year lease on a 20km strip of land around the Gulf of Aden port of Berbera, Somaliland would get shares in Ethiopia’s national airline and more importantly a landmark recognition of their existence by a United Nations member. By setting this precedent, becoming the first nation to acknowledge Somaliland’s independence, Ethiopia would be effectively creating a new country.
