This week, I made a chess set. I used 22mm/7/8in. OD copper and steel pipes to make the pieces and 2.5mm/6oz cow hide to make the board but you can adapt the size to your need. Once all the pieces were done, I wet the leather to emboss the chess board, I used black leather dye for the black squares and let the leather undyed for the white ones. Once the letters and numbers were punched into the hide, I put two coats of leather neatsfoot oil to unify the dye and protect the leather.
