Between D-Day and the end of April 1945, more than 2.8 million German soldiers surrendered on the Western Front and seriously weakened the German Wehrmacht in the West. On the 7th of May 1945, shortly after the death of Adolf Hitler, the unconditional surrender of the German Third Reich was signed by General Alfred Jodl, who was the Chief of Staff of the German Army at that time. He signed four documents at the same time, one for each country of the Allied forces: the United States, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and France.
