The GE Circlite and similar fluorescent circline adapters were the first form of energy-saving lighting to fit in a standard bulb socket. They're difficult to assemble, too large to fit in many lamps, and take a long time to turn on, but produce bright, pleasant light and use much less power and produce much less heat than a standard incandescent bulb.
