Nansha District, the municipal district of Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, is the sub center of Guangzhou. It is located at the southernmost end of Guangzhou, the West Bank of Humen waterway of the Pearl River and the confluence of Xijiang River, Beijiang River and Dongjiang River. The total area of the region is 803 square kilometers. Nansha District is located in the geographical geometric center of the Pearl River Estuary of China and the Great Bay area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. It is the only channel to the sea in Guangzhou, China. It is also an important hub node connecting the urban agglomeration on both sides of the Pearl River Estuary and Hong Kong and Macao. There are Nansha port, the only deep-water Wharf in the west of the Pearl River Delta China Shipbuilding Longxue shipbuilding base, one of the three largest shipbuilding bases in China, and Guangzhou Nansha bonded port area, the first bonded port area in Guangdong Province that has passed the formal acceptance of the state. The traffic axes such as Guangzhou Shenzhen Hong Kong high-speed railway and Guangzhou Metro Line 4 run vertically and horizontally.
In May 1993, the State Council approved the establishment of Guangzhou Nansha Economic and Technological Development Zone. In April 2005, Nansha District became the administrative district of Guangzhou. In September 2012, Guangzhou Nansha New Area was approved as China's national new area. In 2014, China (Guangdong) pilot free trade zone was established, and Nansha New Area is the largest area among them.
