GENERALLY
Solenoid valves are used whenever fluid flow needs to be automatically controlled. They are being increasingly used in the most varied types of plants and equipment. The variety of different designs available allows a valve to be selected to specifically suit the application at hand.

CONSTRUCTION
Solenoid valves are control units that, when electrically energized or de-energized, shut off or allow fluid flow. The actuator is in the form of an electromagnet. When energized, a magnetic field builds up that pulls a piston or hinged armature against the action of a spring. When de-energized, the piston or articulated armature returns to its original position by the action of the spring.

VALVE OPERATION
According to the mode of actuation, a distinction is made between direct acting valves, internally piloted valves and externally piloted valves. Another distinguishing feature is the number of port connections or the number of flow paths ("paths").
