If you're hugging the baseline, you need to use your legs a lot more aggressively to get under the ball to have a more consistent contact point between hip and shoulder. If a tennis player starts about 2 racket lengths behind the baseline, they will have a much easier time to move forward to the ball for better weight transfer.
