Starting Asian Wing Bean Seeds

My first go-around I simply planted them directly in the ground. Next time I'll try soaking them at least for a few hours - maybe even until they sprout before planting them.

Growing Asian Winged Beans

The Asian Winged Bean loves a hot humid climate, like here in our Northeast Florida garden. Considered a tropical legume it thrives in the heat and stops producing once the weather gets colder.

In my garden I planted it the hottest part of the yard where there is lots of mulch and the soil has been growing for a few years.

You'll want to be sure that you make plenty of room for the vines to grow as they are vigorous, growing 15 feet or more. Even with pruning it back it grew back quickly to reclaim it place in the peach and plum trees.

Next season I'll be sure to have a much longer place for the vines to sprawl, which I hope will make it easier to see the pods as they begin forming and growing. The bean taste best when you collect them before they get fibrous and tough. The smaller pods are great in salads. If you have a favorite way to make a stir fry - then you'll love adding these beans to your menu.
