Lock Picking Tips: Using Plug Spinners and Flippers

When teaching beginners how to pick locks, I always say: don’t stress about which direction the lock turns when you pick it. Sometimes, a lock just won’t pick the way you want it to, but that’s okay! There are excellent tools available that will flip the lock into the correct position once you’ve picked it. These tools move the lock's plug so quickly that it snaps into the unlocked position.

The key tip here is: pick the lock however it wants to be picked, and then use a plug spinner or flipper to set it right.

My Go-To Plug Spinners:
A1 Plug Spinner: This is my absolute favorite. It's slim, fits perfectly in my kit, and works quickly and efficiently. A1 makes a reliable, easy-to-use tool that’s great for any locksmith.
HPC and Wendt Plug Spinners: These two brands also make fantastic plug spinners. The HPC is reliable, though a bit bulkier, and the German Wendt is highly effective and fast. These are excellent choices for professionals looking for top-quality tools.
Peterson Plug Spinner: Peterson always delivers quality tools. Their plug spinner is a must-have in any kit. It’s versatile, and they also offer an attachment that lets you spin a lock you’ve bumped in the wrong direction. This feature alone makes it a great fallback option.
Why You Should Have More Than One Plug Spinner

It’s always smart to have at least two plug spinners in your kit. Springs can break, tools can bend, or sometimes you just have a bad day where nothing works. Having a spare ensures you’re always ready to get the job done, even if one tool wears out or malfunctions.
