'Psychology of a Loser

I, son of carbon and ammonia,
Monster of darkness and rutilance,
I suffer, since the epigenesis of childhood
The evil influence of the signs of the zodiac.

Produndissimamente hypochondriac,
This environment causes me disgust.
A craving comes to my mouth analogous to the craving
That escapes from the mouth of a cardiac.

Already the worm - this worker of ruins -
That the rotten blood of carnage
Eats, and to life in general declares war,

Is peeping into my eyes to gnaw them out,
And will leave me only my hair,
In the inorganic coldness of the earth!


Augusto de Carvalho Rodrigues dos Anjos (Sapé, April 20, 1884 - Leopoldina, November 12, 1914) was a Brazilian poet, often identified as a symbolist or parnassian. His poems are mostly about illness and death, and are considered the forerunners of Modernism in Brazil.
However, many critics, such as the poet Ferreira Gullar, prefer to identify him as pre-modernist, since we find distinctly expressionist characteristics in his poems.
He is known as one of the most critical poets of his time, focusing his criticism on the self-centered idealism that emerged in his time, and to this day his work is admired by both laymen and literary critics.
He is the patron of chair number 1 of the Academia Paraibana de Letras (APL), whose founder was the jurist and essayist José Flósculo da Nóbrega, and whose first occupant was his biographer Humberto Nóbrega, being currently occupied by José Nêumanne Pinto. Augusto dos Anjos is also the patron of the Leopoldinense Academy of Arts and Letters.

I grew up listening to Brazilian music (sambas, funk, rock, pagodes) like Bezerra da Silva, Zeca Pagodinho, Secos e Molhados, Clube da Esquina, Titãs, Chico Buarque, Ratos de Porão, Banda Black Rio, Samba Schools... and also international artists like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Bauhaus, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, to name a few. I had the pleasure of winning the CALIFORNIA MUSIC AWARD for Latin Alternative Album and the SF WEEKLY MUSIC AWARD for Best World Music in the Bay Area with my band Bat Makumba.

I am currently living in Switzerland and am composing and playing with Custard Pie Power Funk, a band from the Border Triangle region of France, Switzerland and Germany.
