The truth is, there's no secret recipe to homemade wood filler with sawdust. Just be sure to use fine sawdust from your sander, ONLY use sawdust from the wood you'll be patching if you want the best match, AND remember no wood filler (homemade or store-bought) will absorb stain like wood. So, to hide wood filler patches, I prefer to use gel stain, polyshades, or glazes that sit on top of the wood, instead of soaking in.
