A Quick History of the Battle of Stanford Hill and a Walk Around the Woods & Fields Vlog 61

Join Luna and Wayne as they explore the historic battlefield of Stanford Hill, where the Battle of Stratton took place on May 16th, 1643. Discover the fascinating story of how the Parliamentarians, despite holding the high ground, were outnumbered and defeated by the Royalists under Sir Ralph Hopton. The Royalists claimed victory, leaving behind 2,000 Parliamentarian troops, with 300 dead and 1,700 taken as prisoners. You'll also hear about the Stratton giant, Anthony Payne, who at 7'4" and 32 stone served as Sir Bevill Grenville's bodyguard.

Wander with us through the four fields and woods surrounding Stanford Hill, rich in wildlife, with the tranquil River Stratt flowing at the base of the hill. Don’t miss the monument commemorating this important battle, erected in 1971, and hear tales from the historic Tree Inn where Payne lived and passed away.
