Colonial settlers arrived in America for multiple reasons and settled into 13 colonies. Some came for religious freedom. Some came to earn money.

A colony is a region of land that is under the political rule of another country.

Most of the time the controlling country is located far away from the actual colony,

This was the case with England and the 13 American colonies.

So why were the colonies established?

Queen Elizabeth wanted to establish these new colonies in North America to expand the British Empire and to oppose the Spanish.

The English were hoping to find wealth, new jobs, and establish trade ports throughout the coast of America.

The first permanent settlement, or colony, was Jamestown, Virginia In 1607 by English settlers and Virginia became a royal colony in 1624.

The Puritans also known as Pilgrims established Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620 which was the second English colony founded in America

Settlers founded New Hampshire in 1623, but it did not gain its name until 1629.

During the next hundred years, European settlers founded more colonies all around the east coast of North America.
