Lake Maggiore - The region around Italy's second largest lake is known as the "Gate of the South". With Mediterranean vegetation and botanical gardens, Lake Maggiore is nestled in a breathtaking mountain landscape. Judith Rakers discovers a vacation paradise that combines water sports on the lake and hiking in the mountains.

A place of longing for vacationers and emigrants
On her trip she meets locals and emigrants who enjoy the "Dolce Vita" on Lake Maggiore. In Ascona, Switzerland, with its picturesque lakeside promenade, she meets sailing instructor Tony Meier, who lets her take the wheel on the journey across the lake. Judith Rakers' next destination is the "camping paradise" Cannobio. In the second generation, a Swiss-German family has built a small camping empire here, which has been luring numerous regular guests to the cheaper Italian side of the lake for decades. The German emigrant Günter Erhart also fulfilled his dream on Lake Maggiore: he built his extraordinary double-decker bus with huge panorama windows and a folding sun deck himself in 20 years of tinkering.

Nature and culture around and on the lake
On a hike through the beautiful Maggia Valley with its numerous chestnut trees, Judith takes a break in a grotto, a restaurant built into the rock, and learns how the polenta typical of the region is made. She also attends Alex and Almute Neaf's stonemason school in the marble-rich area. We continue via Cannero Riviera, the northernmost point of Europe where lemons are grown, to the island of Isola Bella, the destination and highlight of the trip. The magnificent palace with its exotic gardens is one of the greatest attractions on Lake Maggiore.
