Around 1630 B.C., a volcanic eruption on the Greek island of Santorini is believed to have destroyed the civilization of Atlantis. On a lighter note, the eruption has enabled the island to produce some of the world's most delicious and unique wine. From an effervescent, white grape called Assyrtiko, to a special dessert wine called Vinsanto, Santorini offers wine lovers an unparalleled experience.

On an excursion around the island with Santorini Wine Tour, we managed to taste the wine of three different wineries: Gavalas, Estate Argyros, and Domaine Sigalas. Led by our charismatic guide, Vaios, we not only enjoyed the adventure, but also learned a great deal about the island's viticulture. For example, we learned how the vines are trained to coil close to the ground to protect the grapes from Santorini's strong winds and searing sunshine. Also, the volcanic pumice collects moisture from the sea air, which allows the vines to grow without irrigation.

We enjoyed our stay on Santorini immensely. Learning how the island's wines emerged from an eruption into the effervescent gems of today was an experience we would highly recommend.
