This was recorded some years before Curtis transitioned into his better-known career as actor in a series of western movies and TV shows (most notably as Festus in “Gunsmoke”).

Composed by Edmund Gruber in 1918 as “The U.S. Field Artillery March,” this was among the many patriotic tunes recorded in the weeks following 12/7/41. Note the absence of brass instruments in this and other recordings made by Fields’ “New Music” band from this period.

Audio tape source, originally issued on 78rpm: Bluebird B-11477 - The Caissons Go Rolling Along (Gruber) by Shep Fields and his New Music, vocal by Ken Curtis & Ensemble, recorded February 16, 1942 .
