Terrified of Mauritanian sand! The reputation has my nerves high. Day 7 sees me facing the next country in the race to Dakar and it was intense first day in Mauritania! It started with the border. I had a few issues crossing the border from Morocco into Mauritania along with many other competitors and even the helicopters. This cause a long 2-hour wait on one of the hottest days so far. These delays did not help my nerves. Thankfully my team game and some banter kept my mind entertained while we waited the all clear to start. Nearly every person I spoke with leading up to the Africa Eco Race warned me "be careful of the sand in Mauritania, it’s so soft and challenging to ride. It is by far the hardest leg of the race" so after 6 days of riding already it is safe to say I begun to doubt my riding ability and questioning whether I’d have the stamina fitness and skill to make it through.
Riding over the border into Mauritania saw a transition in such an emotional and moving way; from the level of rubbish to the quality of living in the communities, and also the colossal amount of sand and to think this is just a teaser of what the adventure in Mauritania will be like over the second week of the race. The day was going well. I had a small shock as I was first on scene to a car that had rolled in the tricky soft sand.
