Romani is a language spoken by the descendants of lute players who left the Indian Subcontinent 1500 years ago. Much like the history of its people, the knowledge of the language itself is rather elusive, and there exist many dialects of Romani.

While not mutually intelligible with other Indo-Aryan languages such as Gujarati, Persian, and Hindi, Romani shares quite a few cognates with those languages as well as some grammatical features. Add in the fact that Romani is able mix itself with other languages and even adopt certain linguistic features from the native language of its host country, and Romani really is a language for modern nomads.
