Wuhan City, referred to as "Han", also known as Jiangcheng, is one of the megacities[7] and national central cities[8] of the People's Republic of China, the provincial capital and sub-provincial city of Hubei Province[9]. The largest city in central China and the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, it is also the center of politics, economy, finance, commerce, logistics, science and technology, culture, education, transportation and communication in the central region [10], a national historical and cultural city [11], has " The thoroughfare of nine provinces"[12]. Wuhan is the geographical center of China's economy, one of the three major "inland waterway shipping centers" in China, and one of the railway hubs and aviation and highway hubs with the largest passenger traffic in China. In October 2017, UNESCO approved the Wuhan Global Creative City Network project and awarded Wuhan the title of "City of Design", becoming the fourth "City of Design" in China after Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing[30]. In December of the same year, Wuhan won the "2017 Urban Innovation" award[31].

In December 2019, the COVID-19 epidemic broke out in Wuhan[32]. In order to curb the spread of the epidemic, the Wuhan New Coronary Pneumonia Epidemic Prevention and Control Headquarters announced the "city closure" on January 23, 2020[33]. On April 8, Wuhan lifted the control measures for the passage from Han to Hubei and resumed external traffic [34].
On May 24, 1949, the Wuhan Municipal People's Government was established. Until June 1954, Wuhan was a municipality directly under the central government and the seat of the party, government and military organs of the Central South Administrative Region
Wuhan is one of the largest industrial and commercial cities in central China and even inland China, with metallurgy, textile, shipbuilding, manufacturing, optoelectronics, information, education, medicine, food, chemical, automobile and other industries
In 2019, Wuhan's GDP reached 1,622.321 billion yuan, and the per capita disposable income of urban residents and rural residents was 51,706 yuan and 24,776 yuan respectively[119], ranking eighth in China's total GDP in 2019
By the end of 2020, the resident population of Wuhan is 12.3265 million
