Mozart's epic Fantasia in C minor was composed in Vienna in 1785. It was published alongside the Sonata in C minor, K. 457, and the two can be considered one larger work. This was the fertile creative period in which Mozart also produced some of his greatest piano concertos and his most popular opera, The Marriage of Figaro.

The Fantasia is an episodic work, almost like a series of operatic scenes or vignettes. It is highly chromatic and changes key so frequently that Mozart only uses a key signature in one of the episodes, choosing to use accidentals for the other sections.
