The lands of Mt Pintubo are home to the indigenous Aetas. The eruption coincided with Typhoon Yunya in the Philippines bringing a dangerous mix of ash and rain to nearby towns. Fortunately, early predictions led to mass evacuations, saving many lives.

An ancient legend tells of Bacobaco, a terrible spirit of the sea, who could metamorphose into a huge turtle. When chased by spirit hunters, Bacobaco flees to the mountain and digs a great hole in its summit showering the land with rock, mud, and fire.

After being driven away by the 1991 eruption, in May 2009 some 454 Aeta families were given the first ancestral land ownership on Mount Pinatubo with the Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples.

Tubag Jugatan is a tribal chief of his indigenous people. Sponsored by his local church he has travelled the world, to France, Portugal, Spain, Denmark, and more, but chooses to live the simple life of his people. He lived through the Mount Pinatubo eruption.
