Coming up, an interview with an artist who is on the shortlist of greatest singers ever. Part 2 of our sit down with Paul Rodgers who made his bones with many huge rock bands from Free to Bad Company to The Firm. Paul Rodgers killed it with every band he was in. In fact, he is one of a few artists in rock history to sing and write a top 5 hit with 4 different bands. Today he tells the story of a song that was so atmospheric and cool that the band drug all their recording equipment out to the middle of a field at night in the moonlight. It took hours to get everything hooked up, this was the 70s so it was difficult and Paul nailed it in 1 take. The name of the song would become the name of the band: Bad Company. He tells the story next on Professor of Rock.

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs. Today we are giving you more of an interview I recently did with one of the greatest singers in rock history. Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury, and Ann Wilson of Heart all say he’s their favorite singer… Paul Rodgers. Today we dig into his history right after he obliterated radio with his band FREE with the top 5 smash Alright Now. He formed Bad Company with former Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs, Free Drummer Simon Kirke, and former King Crimson bassist Boz Burell. They were managed by Peter Grant who also helmed Led Zeppelin.

Bad Company ruled rock radio through the 70s with classic rock standards like Can’t Get Enough, Feel Like Making Love, Rock and Roll Fantasy, Shooting Star, and their band’s theme song Bad Company! Their debut album is an all-time rock and roll magnum opus. The song Bad Company was sort of a theme song for the band! And outside of the TV show The Monkees, no rock band had ever really done that in such a serious way.

In fact, the song was so atmospheric, so chilling and cool. the band wanted to add something cool and haunting to it. So they left the studio. They drug all their equipment to a secluded field in the middle of the night underneath the moonlight to record the song Bad Company. Now remember this was the early 70s so it was not an easy thing to do.

It took hours and by the time it was already it was early in the morning past midnight… the band said it took 3 hours to set it up with wires and leads and everything… then Paul Rodgers walked up to the microphone with the cool breeze behind him and Nailed in JUST ONE TAKE. There are actually two stories about where this song, the title of it came from. Up next in our interview, Paul will tell us the story of this legendary song and his other big ones with Bad Company as well as some more insight into his first solo record in years. Midnight Rose… Paul Rodgers had a top 5 hit with four different bands… Can you name them?
