Bricklaying runs in the family and in this special episode, ‪@SteveAndAlexBuild‬ discuss how they got into bricklaying and what the dynamic of father and son has done for them

Alex always wanted to build things since he had be into Legos at a young age

Steve had a multitude of career interests like milkman, fireman, train driver, merchant navy, engineer in metal work

Steve became a bricklayer completely by accident and how Alex wanted to be a bricklayer against his dad’s wishes

Alex discusses how construction is nothing like it was dreamed up to be when he was growing up watching bob the builder. And how the treatment of bricklayers can vary. Steve started in 1987 when H&S didn’t really exist and tells a funny story at how one of his workmates got stuck in a mixer

They talk about one of their favourite projects which is a house they built on their own.

“Build it like its for your nan”

Steve stresses the importance of looking after yourself on the construction site

Alex believes the industry can change by altering the perception/reputation of bricklayers/tradespeople on site and could be treated with respect they deserve.

They discuss how they are able to blend work life and family life seamlessly and what it means to have each other to lean on.

They talk about how working alongside each other has helped them with efficiency and strategies on site and Steve has been dealing with hip issues and Alex is able to help out

They talk about the inspiration of starting their own YouTube channel.

They discuss the importance of Social media in the construction industry and how it allows for builders to show off their work

They both discuss their construction end goals for themselves, the business and the YouTube Channel and how its allowed them to be a part of a larger community of builders that feel like friends hanging out more than people you just see online

Lastly Alex discusses why the youth should consider a career in construction.
