Using a cheap set of midi cables to join two keyboards can unleash a whole new world of possibilities.
Here we use them to select songs using just one keyboard to change the combi patch on both.
Speeding up time on stage and making it easier to navigate especially if one keyboard has the benefit of a large touchscreen. (This would be now called the master and the second keyboard the slave)
Midi is capable of so much more, this is really the tip of the iceberg and once you get started on this you will probably want it to continue on and make some superb Blended tracks with both keyboard playing out of both keyboard layered or with keybed splits at certain areas. This is just a quick video to show how easy it can be to hopefully motivate you to get started. I am no expert on midi, I’m a beginner just like most people here today so have a read up on it to discover more ways it can help you either in the studio or in a live band situation. There may be fresh ways to make what I’ve shown you better, if so, include them in the comments. It’s all helpful, I don’t mind nice suggestions from people to add to it. Just keep it clean thank you.

The Keyboards used in this video are a Korg M3 and a Nord Stage 3
I’ve been using it this way in many brands of keyboards starting out with the Roland Fantom series connected to the Nord Stage (1) so it’s easy to adapt these steps to work with your keyboard by finding the correct settings we’ve changed in your own keyboards menu.

Further reading.

If you want sounds from the Korg to play on the Nord keyboard then set the midi channel of those sounds on page 3 timbre select to midi channel 8 just like we did on the ext2 channel 8 part. Any of the 16 channels can be sent to the nord to play on their.

If you want to turn off the sounds on the nord and send them all to the nord (some people like waterfall keyboards for organs rather than hammer action) then on the nord, in the midi section (shift3) on page one local control. Set it to off.

The nord has a dedicated external section switch that can be used to expand on the basics we covered, have a read up in it and it’s capabilities as you may wish to include so much more into this once you get started.

Hint, many keyboards have midi in out thru connections on the rear. Most are in that speech order when sitting down in front of the keyboard. If you notice I didn’t look at the back of the Korg when I plugged in, I felt for the furthest to the left just like reading a book. From left to right they read midi in out thru just like we say it. So the 1st one I came to is In. The middle is out and the right one is thru. This saves having to stand up and go to the back of the keyboard to double check. It’s rare but not a certainty that they are different to this.
