Cervical spondylitis, also known as cervical spondylosis, is a medical condition that affects the cervical spine, which is the upper part of the spine that is located in the neck region. It is a degenerative disorder that involves wear and tear of the spinal discs and joints in the neck region.

The condition occurs as a result of the natural aging process, but it can also be caused by trauma, injury, or prolonged poor posture. Symptoms of cervical spondylitis include neck pain, stiffness, and restricted range of motion in the neck, as well as headaches and numbness or tingling sensations in the arms or hands.

Physiotherapy exercises for cervical spondylitis

Here are some physiotherapy exercises that can be helpful for people with cervical spondylitis:

Neck stretches: Slowly tilt your head forward, backward, and side-to-side, holding each position for about 5-10 seconds. Repeat this exercise 5-10 times.

Chin tucks: Sit or stand with your shoulders relaxed and your head in a neutral position. Gently tuck your chin in towards your chest, keeping your eyes looking forward. Hold this position for 5-10 seconds and then release. Repeat this exercise 5-10 times.

Shoulder blade squeeze: Sit or stand with your arms at your sides. Squeeze your shoulder blades together, hold for 5-10 seconds, and then release. Repeat this exercise 10 times.

Upper trapezius stretch: Sit or stand with your shoulders relaxed. Gently pull your head to the side with one hand, while keeping your shoulders level. Hold this position for 5-10 seconds and then release. Repeat on the other side.

Cervical rotation: Sit or stand with your shoulders relaxed. Slowly turn your head to one side, hold for 5-10 seconds, and then return to the starting position. Repeat on the other side.

It's important to note that these exercises should only be performed under the guidance of a qualified physiotherapist, as incorrect form or technique can cause further damage to the cervical spine. A physiotherapist can also recommend other exercises that are tailored to your specific condition and needs.
