Why Drywall?
'The current pandemic as well as a continued desire for a deeper connection with our material environment reminds us of the value of making things ourselves. However, would be ‘DIYers’ are often confronted with the need for an arsenal of expensive and potentially daunting power tools before they can get started. This is what lead us to experiment with drywall, a material that is extremely democratic in it’s accessibility, affordability and ease of working with.
Since it is comprised of gypsum plaster sandwiched between two layers of paper, the boards can be cut using a ruler and knife, before being snapped by hand and adhered with PVA glue.
Each piece can be built in a matter of hours and comfortably fits within a 1.2 x 2.4m drywall sheet available from DIY or building supply stores, or alternatively can be made from offcuts, and when calculated by surface area only costs £1.35 per stool, £3.58 per coffee table, £1.90 per bedside table and £6.40 per shelving unit. The result is a series which not only opens up the possibility for drywall to be used in new applications but that enables more people to gain the benefits of making their own furniture; understanding the material and having a personal connection to the pieces.'
