What is a dynamometer?
A dynamometer is a device used to measure the output force of a rotating machine.
The dynamometer (or force meter) is most commonly used to measure the horsepower of an electric motor or an automobile engine. The product of the torque applied to the rotating part and the angular velocity gives the force. The most commonly used force-measuring dynamometer consists of a flexible metal ring. When a force is loaded to compress this ring, the ring twists and the force is measured according to the amount of torsion. The greater the force exerted by the object, the more the spring is stretched. The values measured on the dynamometer are displayed in Newtons (N). (1 Newton = 1/9.81 kg)
