Former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt in 2011, spoke Thursday on the final night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, an evening focused on the future as Kamala Harris formally accepts her party’s nomination for president.

Giffords, alongside her husband, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, spoke about her recovery from being shot in the head.

“I almost died,” Giffords said. “I fought for my life and I survived. I learned to talk in one word at a time. So many people helped me as I worked hard to recover.”

Giffords said she believes Harris will continue to fight the “gun lobby.”

Harris’ speech is her first official chance to offer her vision for the country to voters. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz formally accepted the vice presidential nomination the day before.
