One cause of color banding (also called posterization) in digital images is making large adjustments to 8-bit image files. But Photoshop users sometimes see color banding even when editing a 16-bit image. This is most likely something called false banding. Fortunately, this banding is not affecting your image so it isn't even something you need to fix. In this tutorial, I explain how to know if the banding in your photo is actually there or not.
