In this episode, Sonya is joined by Dr Dean St Mart, to discuss individualising diet & supplements, understanding female hormones and menopause, the pros, and cons of bodybuilding, how to mitigate the negative impact of having taken steroids, thyroid health, fasting and using supplements to improve sleep.

Dean is an international bodybuilder, champion kickboxer and renowned fitness industry pharmacologist. He has used this experience and his pharmacological training to create supplement stacks, each of which supports a specific system in the body e.g. the liver.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

A good diet is the cornerstone of health, but at points, most people can benefit from supplements. But it has to be the right ones for you, look at your bloodwork. Test don´t guess.
Antioxidants are important. Oxidative stress plays a role in heart disease.
If your brain does not believe it is safe, you cannot fall asleep and nutrition impacts sleep quality.
Tracking calories while ignoring nutrition is a mistake.
Eating enough protein is important, especially for women.
Fasting supports good health, but if you eat junk either side of the fast you undo the benefits.
Estradiol production drops during menopause. Supplementation can counter some of the negative impact this has.
During menopause maintaining adrenal health is key.
Women as well as men can benefit from testosterone testing.

BEST MOMENTS:

“I didn't really appreciate how powerful that mental thought process is to shaping your environment and your actions to match it.”

“The majority of your nutrition should be around serving your body.”

“Everybody´s individual body is genetically unique.”
