Southwest France Gite (house) tour! Gites are often very affordable to book as furnished rentals in the French off-season (September - June) for long-stay travel in more rural areas.

What is a gite? A gite is a furnished holiday rental frequently in a renovated country cottage or a converted barn in the countryside or a small village.

In this video we explore and showcase the French farmhouse gite that we've rented for the year.

Websites to find gites:

Long Term Rentals in France - https://www.longtermrentalsinfrance.com/
This site does have properties all over France but definitely skews toward the South of France

Rent a Place in France - https://www.rentaplaceinfrance.com/
Run by a family from Scotland who live in France, specializes in longer stays, and connects you directly with owners. Prices are great, many owners are from the UK renting their summer houses in the off-season so they speak English. Do pay attention, as prices per month are sometimes listed in British pounds and sometimes in euros.

Gites de France - https://www.gites-de-france.com/en
I've never booked on this site and it's more focused on holiday rentals, BUT I know it's very popular with French gite owners to list their properties on so I definitely thought I should include it. I also understand that properties have to be inspected before they get listed and rated, so that gives you some assurance in booking.

About Airbnb: There are definitely gites on Airbnb, but you'll probably pay a bit more for them than if you can find a way to book with owners directly as you can on some of the above sites. Change the search criteria to monthly when you search for long-term stays on airbnb. Prices often drop by 25% - 50% from nightly rates.

Another Option: If there's a particular village you're interested in, go to Google Maps and use the search function by typing in "gites", often independent ones will pop up that you didn't see if you were searching in Google in English!

About Us:
We are an American family of 3 who moved to France for an extended stay adventure in 2022.
We wanted to experience Europe as more than rushed tourists on a 10-day vacation. To dive into the culture, learn a new language, experience daily life, and truly know what it was like to work and live somewhere other than the US.

In France, we set up a business, enrolled in a middle school, found housing, and even got our cat a European passport!

While in the US preparing to leave, the information we found about staying in France for longer than a short vacation was directed at college students, young & single digital nomads, or retirees. Where was the useful information for families like us?

With a year under our belts in France, we created Baguette Bound to pass on what we have learned. We hope to make it easier and inspire other families who are interested in experiencing a long stay in France with their families. Stay tuned for more information on French culture, local travel ideas, and the logistics of moving across the world.
