Try out this free Waldorf painting lesson for second grade and see how simple and easy painting can be for your homeschool child. This lesson is for parents and teachers in any educational setting who want to bring painting to second graders.

What you will learn:
--How to work with the materials: wet paper, watercolors, brush, painting rag/sponge.
--How to guide paintings through a "color story" process.
--How support the creative process so that children feel joyful and at ease rather than stressed and/or disappointed.
--How to review artwork in ways that support openness and imagination rather than judgment and critique, thus fostering a child's sense of self and accomplishment in a positive way.
--To understand that the way we teach any subject, even watercolor painting, can support the second grader in ways far beyond the activity of painting, because you will begin to see this process on a deeper level

In this video lesson, much like the first grade example lesson, we continue using the method primarily focused on the "Color Story" process. In other words, I tell a story about the colors, their moods, their feelings, their actions, and their interactions with one another. In this way, the student gradually learns how to work with this watercolor medium as well as the characteristics of each of the colors. In this gentle way, we build their confidence and enthusiasm for painting (in the immediate sense) as well as the willingness to be creative in general. In second grade, we build on this with more opportunities to find forms, but the forms are mostly simple and their realization is not absolutely necessary. This is how we can remain flexible with the child's progress toward having the ability to create forms. Always they are growing and learning and this is what is most important. If they just engage in another color story painting without creating cascades or tress or whatever, that is just fine! They are still learning!
