Join me as I uncover the hidden gems of Skierniewice and learn why this town is a must-visit destination in Poland.

In the begining of the video you will see the monument of Stanisław Wokulski at the railway station in Skierniewice.

Stanisław Wokulski is a literary character, the protagonist of Bolesław Prus’s novel “The Doll”; Wokulski’s character has become a symbol of entrepreneurship in Polish popular culture. The Skierniewice episode in Bolesław Prus’s novel “The Doll” concerns the main character’s suicide attempt, who, suffering from love for a woman, lies down on the tracks in front of an oncoming train.

However, contrary to popular belief, this did not happen in Skierniewice, but outside the city, probably near the present-day Rawka district.

As Prus wrote, Wokulski got off the train and after a dramatic farewell with Iza, the train departed.

“It was already two in the morning,” when, talking to a railway worker, he heard that the train from Warsaw would arrive “in three quarters of an hour (…) He turned away from the stranger and walked along the embankment towards Warsaw. (…) The night was starry, the fields dark (…) Suddenly, from afar, he saw two lights (…) The train was slowly approaching. Wokulski, not realizing what he was doing, fell onto the tracks.”
